Ngārarahuarau – the tipua from Wainui – escaped the burning wharenui.

Flames covered his body.
He ran for his life from Whakatū to high up on Pikikirunga.

Burning scales fell from his body.
We know this because we see them still.

He reached the top and dug deep into the earth.
We know this because this is the hole.

He dug and dug and dug. Creating tunnels and caves as he went.
We know this because these are the caves.

Life drained out of him and his blood flowed out of the cave beneath Wainui Falls.
We know this because tiny drops of his blood turned to stone. We find them amongst all the grains of golden sand.
